What You’re Getting
This playbook highlights strategies, hard-won learnings, and perspective from working with a wide variety of Corporate Innovation Groups (CIGs) over the last 14 years. Most recently, we conducted interviews with over a dozen leaders of innovation groups at a diversity of companies to gather anecdotes and strategies about their CIG’s journey. Inside, we share some of their stories and we also provide checklists and a sort of “you are here” guide that aims to enable you to take these insights and assess where your team might focus its efforts to ensure long term success. We’ve broken this journey into four major phases.
Being intentional about how your Corporate Innovation Groups (CIG) is formed requires a clearly-defined strategy, funding mechanism and identity relative to other parts of the organization. There’s no one-size-fits-all model for CIGs, but we offer the critical questions that every new group needs to ask themselves to tailor their strategy and structure to their context.
Getting your CIG up and running us just the beginning - now you have to run a project to pressure test your strategy and structure, while continuing to establish your group within the broader organization. This section has considerations for how to kick-off your first project and begin to grow your portfolio of projects within the CIG.
The CIG will reach a phase where it is running on all cylinders, but the work isn’t over. Looking for ways to learn and grow from your in-flight work and measure your performance against the right metrics are key. This section offers strategies for measuring, growing and protecting your innovation group.
Iteration is a given, not only in your design and innovation projects, but also for the CIG as a whole. The strategies in this section help you be more proactive in how you re-calibrate your group, and what to do when you are forced to be more reactive in how you reset.
Let’s collaborate to get your innovation group up-and-running.
